Mashup maps (reflections) 18 December 2018 Buy high-res file -- I was originally inspired by this map from Business Insider Australia, which shows how similar Brazil and Australia are in shape and size. My first thought was, “Wow! The curves and coastlines match up a little too well.” Then something else occurred to me: the population distributions are kind of similar, as well—a rotated Australia would have most of its people living in the “Southeast”, in the Melbourne-Sydney-Brisbane corridor.

Roman Roads of Iberia 27 May 2018 -- Buy high-res file -- Notes: This map was a blast to make. I chose to follow the Antonine Itinerary more strictly, which meant that I had to deal with many parallel lines. This forced me to go out of my comfort zone with a new design, but I think it looks good in the end.

Roman Roads of Italy 27 May 2018 -- Buy high-res file -- Versione italiana — Italian version
Notes: It’s taken me almost a year to get around to doing this, but as promised, here is the transit-style map of the ancient Roman roads of Italy!
The same caveats apply to this map as the previous ones. It was fortunate enough that Italy’s Roman roads are quite well-studied and documented, especially when it comes to their actual ancient names.

Four possible outcomes in Korea The Panmunjom Declaration is an exciting step towards peace on the Korean peninsula—a goal many have worked hard towards across many decades. We have forecasted four scenarios of potential developments as a result of future summits, closed-door deliberations, and agreements. A realistic view of current developments would mean that the future most likely lies somewhere between Scenarios 1 and 2.
The summit is an easy political win.

Click the images to get PNG versions. National overview As of 2017, life expectancy at birth in Russia is 72.5 years.
This is quite an improvement over the mid 1990s, when life expectancy had fallen into the low 60s, on par with much less developed countries like Sudan and Pakistan. And, for the first time, it is actually a modest improvement over Soviet levels which, in the '60s, topped many Western countries—but then froze in time as the economy stagnated.

Printable United States map This is a general-purpose map of the United States, designed from the bottom up to be printable by everyone, and to look great on the humble 8.5 x 11 paper.
When making maps, or just looking at data, I do a lot of sketching. I usually Google Image search some kind of basemap, and scribble on that.

What if China falls apart? I am not an expert on China or its government. I am just a casual observer with some knowledge of what happened in the USSR, and I saw some parallels that I wanted to explore, just as a thought experiment. Design shamelessly based on a great Nat Geo map hanging in my room.
China is an absolute behemoth—it’s the last traditional empire that is still more or less intact (Mongolia and Taiwan have slipped away, though).

France has shrunk This is a map I made for Catholic GIS, a great organization that I worked for a couple years back. My content was never published, so I’m sharing it now here.
Earlier I saw Émile Cheysson’s groundbreaking 1888 visualization, titled Accélération des voyages en France. Cheysson saw that as travel improved over the last 200 years, the country of France had essentially shrunk.

List of Western countries 7 December 2017
There is no single definition of what the West is, so the list of countries changes depending on context. The different contexts are outlined in this Wikipedia article. Since people are now visiting this page more frequently, I will present three definitions, which people can use depending on context:
The Latin West (cultural definition) – A broad definition of the West is all countries that were shaped historically by Western Christianity – today’s Catholic and Protestant churches.
