Top k countries 5 March 2019 Buy high-res file -- I tried a little mapping experiment. If I had more time I could write some code to automate this whole process.
The surprise to me here is Mexico. It just ~barely~ makes 15th place in both area and GDP. Japan lacks area, Indonesia lacks productivity, Australia and Canada lack people.
Another mapping experiment:

Roman roads of Gaul 10 May 2019 -- Buy high-res file -- Notes: This was an interesting map to make, but I can’t say it was fun all the time. Generally I enjoyed the process, but it was far more challenging than I had anticipated. I go over some of the challenges in my first Gaul live stream on YouTube. I’m also preoccupied right now with finding a job, which is why I had to stop working on this for a while.

Notes: The geography of golf. I know the scale is wonky, it’s by decile. And yes, Iceland has way too many golf courses. Though upon closer examination they are usually not a full 18 holes.
Is golf a proxy for elite Anglo culture? I’m particularly interested in Japanese and Korean emulation of said culture.

UN Security Council expansion 3 March 2019 Buy high-res file -- Thanks to regional rivalries, the UN Security Council will probably never add more permanent members. Brazil is the largest Latin American country and a logical choice for a new addition, being top 10 in area, population, GDP and UN funding.
But Brazil speaks Portuguese, not Spanish. This annoys Mexico, who see themselves as the leading Spanish-speaking Latin country.

20 February 2019 Buy high-res file -- The world of power grids. Very revealing if you map it out.
“Interconnected” means there is an AC connection and it’s synced. There may be some mistakes on the map, a lot of info is proprietary/hard to get. Grey areas have no high voltage lines, as is sort of implied.
Of course the reality is way more complicated than this map, even within “interconnected” areas there is a patchwork of partial connections.

13 February 2019 Buy high-res file -- Antarctica—0.00008 people per sq. km! McMurdo is by far the largest community on Antarctica with 1200 people in the summer and 250 in the winter. It’s located at the southernmost ice pack-free point on the continent. King George Island is home to a dozen smaller stations whose populations add up. In many cases the stations are so close to one another that they are basically one community (e.
